Description

genus Priotheron

After 120 million years of constant change, extinction events and radiations, Earth has shed her former rulers. The new fauna is absolutely alien to that of the Holocene epoch. The aggregate of organisms that would have been familiar to us doesn't exist anymore, and those that managed to survive have been relegated. Most of the landmasses (Asia, Europe, Africa, North America and Australia) have gathered into a single massive supercontinent, while Antarctica, the Somalian subcontinent and South America are still on the drift. Climate has cooled down to levels similar to those of the Cenozoic. After ruling the Earth for more than 80 million years, reptiles are declining. Now, the descendents of mammals and birds that had been under their shadow are reclaiming their long forgotten place. But they are not the groups that one would expect to dominate the Earth - most of them are now unrecognizable. The dominant mammals during this epoch are the descendants of familiar groups, like chiropterans, insectivores, some artiodactyles, and specially, carnivores. Surprisingly enough, some of these derived carnivores, the remote descendants of modern weasels, have taken most of the herbivore niches. These brand new "herbivores", which evolved 85 mya after the extinction of the human race, during the fall of the age of reptiles, are called the Heterotheriids. The earliest forms resembled the extinct oreodonts and other primitive herbivores from the Cenozoic, but their dentition was quite different. They gained strenght during the global cooling, and became one the most diverse and cosmopolitan group mammals in the planet. Heterotheriidae comprises a great variety of species, including marine forms. However, over time, some of them began to return to their old ways - predatory forms arised. Among the most remarkable, is the Montauku

This is a genus of predators of the group Heterotheridae, they comprise about 10 species that inhabit the continent of the northern hemisphere. Their ancestors were omnivorous forms that returned, which took the vacant niche left by large predators reptiles. They live in all environments, from deserts, jungles, savannah and tundra. Its appearance is similar to most heterotherids, retaining a front hooves not as developed as that of their close relatives. Although unlike them, they have developed a scythe-shaped claw that allows they to catch and hold their prey better.
Are social, they live in large groups of up to 25 individuals. Her matriarchal hierarchy is dominated by an elderly female, followed by his life partner.
The members of this genus vary in length depending on the species, the largest of them, the stained Montauku, measuring about 2 meters tall and weighs 100 kg.
Their method of hunting varies in species, the greater ambush and short chase, while medium-sized species are long distance hunters, compensating his lack of size with the number of individuals in their packs.
